The Storebro Royal Cruiser 395 was the successor of the successful SRC 380 Biscay. The design was based on the features known from the SRC 380. The ship was processed in many areas even more valuable. While the actual hull and superstructure remained unchanged, the flybridge was completely redesigned.
ChangesThe exterior of the SRC 395 has been changed only slightly compared to its predecessor. The hull has been lengthened in the area of the bathing platform, otherwise it has remained unchanged. The superstructure has also been changed only slightly. The smooth gelcoat known from the SRC 430 Biscay as well as the slightly inclined stainless steel sliding door have been adopted. The new flybridge now reached further over the cockpit and took up the tarpaulin as known from the 430 Biscay. In the interior the woodwork was adapted to the new design line and partly equipped with wooden roller blinds instead of doors. The U-shaped seating area in the saloon was made a little flatter to get more of a sofa than a bench character.
EnginesThe SRC 395 was built during the period when Storebro turned away from Volvo-Penta and used alternative engines. While Caterpillar and Scania engines were used for the larger SRC 430, Yanmar engines were used for the SRC 395.
After the last SRC 380 was already equipped with Yanmar 6LYA-STE (350 HP), the 6LY2-STE (420 HP) was chosen as the top engine. The 6LYA-STE installed in the last SRC 380 was slightly inferior in performance to the previous standard Volvo-Penta TAMD63P-A engine. This led to a 1.5kn lower top speed.
This problem should be compensated by the 6LY2-STE with 420 HP. However, it turned out that the combination of significantly increased power and lower engine weight was not so favourable. The ships overtrimmed at full speed and were correspondingly difficult to steer accurately. The shipyard had to take some tuning measures to stabilize the course of the now lighter and much faster boat.
To avoid the overpowering Yanmar 6LYA-STE (350 HP) were then installed in some SRC 395. Ultimately then, the shipyard returned, also at the insistence of Lennart Ivarsson, to the Volvo Penta TAMD63P-A, for which the ship was originally designed.
