Designer | Richard E. (Dick) Carter (Hull) John H. V. Lindblom (Design) |
The Storebro Royal 33 was based on the hull design of the 0.5-ton racer Carter 33, on which Storebro's design team created a classic, fast sailing yacht with plenty of space and comfort on board.
Storebro Royal 33 MS version with fixed windscreen |
Although sold as a cruising and family boat, the Storebro Royal 33 also satisfied more demanding owners. In fact, it was a modified 0.5 tonne hull, which at the time of its appearance could also compete with the very fast "Scampi 30".
In the price lists from 1978 onwards, the ship was offered as the Storebro Royal 33 S or MS. The MS version had a fixed windscreen. A hardtop was also offered as an alternative, but as far as I know this was not realised.
HullLennart Ivarsson and Lars Bjureus had been thinking about a new motorsailer from Storebro for several years. Unlike the ships on the market at the time, this motorsailer was to be more of a sailboat than a motorboat. In 1976, they remembered the moulds of the Carter 33 that had been stored at the Storebro shipyard since the early 1970's. Dick Carter had asked Lennart Ivarsson to store these moulds after Dick Carter had fallen out with the original shipyard of the Carter 33.
Dick Carter drew a new rudder blade for the Storebro Royal 33, as the originally designed rudder was very expensive to produce and also somewhat more susceptible to grounding.
InteriorUnlike many sailboats to date, the Storebro Royal 33 was to offer the same comfort and luxury that was familiar to customers of motorboats. This included the familiar mahogany interior. Another important feature was the passageway between the bow and stern. This meant that young parents did not run the risk of their children crawling through the cockpit unsupervised.
Modifications
Storebro Royal 33 aft cabin - change of the layout |
A major modification concerned the layout of the aft cabin. The berths, which were arranged on two levels from the start of production, were later converted so that both berths were arranged on one level. This made it possible to use an intermediate cushion to create a large continuous berth. This layout was first mentioned for construction number 6037. It is currently not known whether previous construction numbers were also affected.
